Summary:

The *PRPA Needs Your Action *Paleontological Resources Preservation Act (HR 554 - McGovern MA) To the Members of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology: On Wednesday, May 14, 2008 the House Committee on Natural Resources met in open markup session. One of the bills considered was the "Paleontological Resources Preservation Act" (HR 554 - McGovern MA). An amendment in the nature of a substitute to bring criminal penalties in line with the "Archaeological Resources Protection Act" (ARPA) was offered by Representative Grijalva (AZ) and was agreed to by voice vote. The bill was favorably reported to the House of Representatives, as amended, by voice vote. We are pleased of the current progress and the amended version of the bill as it extends the necessary protection of this valuable scientific resource. SVP has worked for several years to pass this important legislation. I urge you to write your Representative today in support of HR 554. Letters carry more weight than e-mails, so it would be beneficial if you would go to the extra effort of sending a letter. Model letters can be found on the SVP Web site at: http://www.vertpaleo.org/education/government.cfm . Your support letter will arrive faster if you fax it in addition to mailing the hard copy. If possible, please follow-up your letter with a phone call to speak with the legislative assistants in the offices of your congressional representatives who handle public lands and environmental issues. You can find your Representatives addresses and phone/fax numbers at the following websites: http://www3.capwiz.com/c-span/dbq/officials/directory/directory.dbq?command=congdir  http://www.house.gov/ http://thomas.loc.gov/ I want to thank all of you in advance for contacting your Representatives in support of the "Paleontological Resources Preservation Act" (HR 554). The Government Affairs Committee will continue to monitor the bill's movement and will inform you of any progress. Patrick Leiggi Chair, Government Affairs Committee The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology
