The 17th International Symposium on Geo-disaster Reduction

Still looking for a cool conference to attend this summer? Why not travel to Kyrgyzstan for the 17th International Symposium on Geo-disaster Reduction from 19-23 August 2019, organized by our friend Hans-Balder Havenith with Liège University, the Kyrgyz Institute of Seismology and Institute of Geomechanics and Mining, and the International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction (ICGdR)?

The conference venue is located on the shores of Lake Issyk Kul, with stunning views and opportunities for post-session swims, in good old PATA Days tradition.

The symposium will have two days of talks and posters with sessions around the following topics:

  • Earthquake, Landslide, Cascading hazards
  • Central Asian Geohazards; Paleo-studies supporting long-term geohazard evaluation
  • Risk assessment and awareness raising
  • Mining and High Mountain Hazards
  • Site investigation and Monitoring

Abstracts can still be submitted until May 17!

After that, participants will have the chance to join some amazing field trips, for example to the 1911 Ananevo rockslide and the 1911 Kemin Earthquake epicenter, plus more rockslides and an archaeoseismology site for those who can stay until August 25.

The Bielogorka rockslide.

If you want to explore even more rockslides in the Kyrgyz Tien Shan, maybe you still have a chance to join the Kokomeren Summer School on landslides that is guided by Alexander Strom and organized by the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL). The school will be a field camp starting August 3 until the begin of the symposium. There might also still be an option to join the field school for the last week, just get in touch with the organizers for any questions.

I heard that Christoph is going to be an invited speaker at the symposium. I am really looking forward to meeting him and many other friends there. So remember to submit your abstract until May 10 and see you at Lake Issyk Kul in August!

UPDATE: The deadline for abstract submission has been extended to May 17, early bird regsitration until May 31.
