Guest article by Tony Patt, ETH Zürich This morning I was doing my standard reading of the New York Times, which is generally on the good side with climate reporting, and saw the same old thing: an article about a potential solution, which just got the story wrong, at least incomplete. The particular article was
My friend Heidi Cullen at Climate Central in Princeton has an excellent Op-Ed in the New York Times today. It’s about a new study released by the National Academies on attributing extreme weather events to climate change. The study itself is on my reading list for tonight, and you can read it yourself for free. Just click the image below. I know several of the researchers who worked on this
Taiwanese investigators have arrested the developer of a 17-story apartment building that collapsed in an earthquake at the beginning of the month. Approximately 40 people were killed when the building collapsed, there were only two other deaths in the entire city. The charges are suspicion of criminal business misconduct resulting in fatalities. Mainland China has been notorious for shoddy construction practices, and those practices have been blamed for the death of thousands in Sichuan [...]
You might think that I’m going to tell you that it’s faked, but no, the graph is absolutely correct! Really! It’s also yellow journalism, and the end to the journalistic reputation of the folks who put it out (Unless they want to retract it and apologize). I added a little value to this graphic that will explain why it’s so egregious. Andy Revkin at the New York Times decided

In the NewsDinosaur eggs. We love 'em. New research comparing the porosity of 29 species of non-avian dinosaurs' eggs to those of hundreds of extant birds and crocs has concluded that maniraptorans were unique in incubating their eggs in open nests. Read more at Science, The Royal Tyrrell Museum, and Live Science.A significant new dinosaur tracksite, dating to the Middle Jurassic and perhaps preserving the footprints of Cetiosaurus, has been discovered on the Isle of Skye. .. and I don't mean just culturally, but biologically as well.
Carl Zimmer in the New York Times summarizes recent results from a wide ranging study which incorporates the genetics of extant as well as ancient Europeans. The study found evidence for several instance of natural selection altering height, digestion, skin color and our immune system.

There’s a nice little story in the New York Times today about flying saucers. Sixty eight years ago the world learned them, or at least the term originated then. It was in reference to objects that Kenneth Arnold had seen on June 24, 1947 flying over Mt. Rainier. Turns out they were probably a flight … Continue reading Flying Saucers at Mt.
Japan’s new weather satellite is getting a real workout as Typhoon Chan-Hom threatens Shanghai, and the New York Times published a really nice visual piece today showing some of its imagery. This satellite is capable of detecting light in the 3 visible channels of red, green, and blue and therefore we can see a color image of the Earth every few minutes. Check out the NYT piece HERE. The Thunderously Big NewsDidja hear about Brontosaurus yet? Eh? Well, if you haven't, hold on your butt. Arguably the most famous generic name in all of the dinosauria has returned, thanks to a massive phylogenetic reassessment of diplodocidae led by Emanuel Tschopp of Universidade Nova de Lisboan, and published in PeerJ. The press has, predictably, been mostly vomiting on its own shoes, grasping taxonomic and phylogenetic concepts with varying degrees of incompetence. Not all bad, of course, [...]

The Big NewsVintana sertichi is a new Gondwanatherian mammal from Madagascar, and in expanding our knowledge of the clade beyond assorted jaw-y and tooth-y bits, it's a pretty significant discovery. It's one of the largest mesozoic mammals discovered, coming in second to the mighty Repenomamus. More on V. sertichi from the New York Times, NSF, National Geographic, Palaeoblog, and the Guardian. Kulindadromeus on Twitter claims that the reconstructions we've seen are way off, however. Supposedly, [...]
Guest commentary from Abby Swann (U. Washington) This past month, an op-ed by Nadine Unger appeared in the New York Times with the headline “To save the climate, don’t plant trees”. The author’s main argument is that UN programs to address climate change by planting trees or preserving existing forests are “high risk” and a
The New York Times, 12 December 2027: After 12 years of debate and negotiation, kicked off in Paris in 2015, world leaders have finally agreed to ditch the goal of limiting global warming to below 2 °C. Instead, they have agreed to the new goal of limiting global ocean heat content to 1024 Joules. The
