There were just two more stops on this Smithsonian Journeys trip to Australia and New Zealand and both were on the North Island.. I had not previously been to the North Island so I was curious to see just how different it was from the South.Leaving Queenstown we got a great view of Lake Wakatipu. At 50 miles long, it is New Zealand's longest lake and one of the deepest at 1,250 feet. The mountains around the lake (center) are known as The Remarkables. These are the Canterbury Plains south of [...]

Thought I’d share some cool pics taken from Space today. The first one below is from the past week, and is a great view from the ISS courtesy of Astronaut Barry Wilmore. Notice the city lights shining through the clouds. I forecasted a sunny Sunday in Maryland and Delaware today. Missed it by THAT much! Severe storms hit Oklahoma Sunday evening ahead of a powerful tropospheric low pressure system. The

One of the extra-ordinary activities to undertake while visiting the Inca ruins at Machu Picchu is to take the trail to the top of the very obvious "sugarloaf" mountain that is usually framed behind the ruins. I had pre-arranged to obtain a permit to make this trek. I'm so glad I did - the weather was ideal if not a bit steamy and the views were spectacular. The main gate opens at 6 AM and by that time at least 300 people were waiting to enter the sanctuary (as they call Machu Picchu). An [...]

A large high pressure system is producing clear skies over much of the eastern Seaboard tonight, and the visibility is excellent. This launch will actually put 29 different satellites in orbit, including one designed by a group of high school students! I’m just 40 miles away from it here in Salisbury, and should have a great view of the launch. I’ll post some pics of it later tonight here.( A

Here are some photo's from my recent trip to Africa and the country of Zimbabwe. It was fantastic to see the mighty Zambezi River in two locations, Victoria Falls (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) and Mana Pools National Park.At our camp in Victoria Falls (Elephant Camp) a cheetah orphan was saved and raised by local wildlife biologists and it has been totally habituated to humans. His name is Sylvester and he is a magnificent cat. Portrait with Sylvester. His coat was soft [...]

Occasionally on a trip like this, we are at the mercy of the elements. And so it was on the morning of February 7 in the old Inca capital of Cusco when we woke up to pouring rain and a very low ceiling high in the Andes Mountains. No flights were coming in from Lima and that is where our private transport was stationed to come and get us. So our staff arranged for a lecture - in none other than a former chapel on the grounds of our hotel, itself a refurbished monastery. We eventually made it to [...]

Lakes in the far distance, looking southeast. From just southeast of the summit near Lassen Peak on Highway 89, a great view of two California lakes comes into view. The stitched-together photo is stitched shows an apparently disconnected highway in the foreground; what you are really seeing is a couple of very sharp switchbacks going downhill past the outcrops of volcanic rocks in the

This edition of "Photo of the week" is of something a bit closer to home than previous editions have been. The pictures below, excluding the sunset, were taken by me while I was TA'ing a first year geology field trip to Gatineau Park, just outside of Ottawa. The river in the distance in the photos is the Ottawa River. Of course, these photos have a geological interest as well: they show a great view of the Ottawa-Bonnechere graben. For any non-geo types reading this post a graben is the same [...]

Rare Annular Eclipse Seen from the Grand Canyon!

This past weekend was Member's Gathering for the Grand Canyon Association and 142 members from around the country showed up to show their support for our favorite national park non-profit. I gave two lectures to 70 members and took another 25 members on a guided walk along the Trail of Time. But Earth's biggest star, the Sun, was the headliner this weekend. It was eclipsed by the the moon, far enough away from the earth this week to create an annular or ring eclipse. I've been aware of this [...]

Leaving Rwanda and on to South Africa

As we took the three hour drive from the volcanoes area back to Kigali, I reflected on this amazing little country. Consider - plastic bags are outlawed here and there are none of them anywhere seen trashing the highways or the countryside. In over 72 hours on the ground here, I saw a total of one plastic bottle littering the highway! One. (Some of my fellow passengers had their plastic bags taken from them as they went through customs on arrival at the airport). When we saw work crews on the [...]

Final Thought's on Egypt and Flying To Rwanda

We were only in Egypt two days and this is nowhere near enough time to truly feel the pulse of a place. We would have to spend weeks here and talk to hundreds of people to get a true sense of what Egypt might become. But TCS and Starquest Expeditions hire very knowledgeable and well educated local guides who have the pulse of a country in mind when they show us around. Although these trips are fast paced, the amount of material imparted to us is phenomenal. The secret is to not become too [...]

The hazard of living in new places is that, as soon as you step out your door, you see something fascinating. Here, I live atop a volcano that last erupted about 2,000 years ago, so all manner of exciting lava features are present. We have lots of time to explore the lava: we live 18 miles from the nearest civilization, and have no cell service or wifi, so our spare time consists mainly of reading, watching movies, and hiking. (Rough life, eh?)A couple weeks ago, some of the rangers and I [...]
