GIS/Urban planning internship opportunity

Calthorpe Associates is seeking a GIS/urban planning intern to join its regional planning team. There is an immediate opportunity to work on our Vision California project. The Vision California project is producing a map-based land use and transportation scenario analysis tool and a series of alternative visions for how California can accommodate growth. The tool will produce scenario metrics related to green house gas emissions, open space and farmland preservation, energy and water use, community health, and more.

Typical duties will include land use, transportation, and natural resource data preparation and quality control, mapping, spatial and quantitative analysis, and research to support the development of the Vision California modeling tool. Duties will also include support for writing reports and analyses. Broader opportunities and promotion may be available to the right candidate with urban planning or related training and working knowledge of land use and transportation planning, New Urbanism, and the impacts of varying growth patterns.

The candidate should be proficient in ArcGIS 9 and quantitative analysis. He or she should be able to convey large quantities of geographic information clearly and concisely for public and stakeholder audiences. Applicants should be comfortable using MS Excel, and in ArcGIS, working with large vector datasets, file geodatabases, shapefiles, grid themes, and ModelBuilder. Experience with Spatial Analyst and familiarity with SQL queries, Python programming language, open source GIS, PostGresSQL or other open source database software is desirable but not required. Writing experience, good communication skills, and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite are also desirable. A Masters degree in urban planning or a related field is desirable, but not required.

Please send resume, along with cover letter, references and up to 5 pages of work samples, either via email to sheara@calthorpe.com or by mail to Calthorpe Associates, c/o Planning Intern, 2095 Rose Street, Suite 201, Berkeley CA 94709. No phone calls, please.
